Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) were established in 1997–98 to provide quality education to Scheduled Tribe (ST) children living in remote areas, enabling them to access higher and vocational courses and secure jobs across various sectors. These schools focus not only on academics but also emphasize the overall development of students. Each school has a capacity of 480 students and provides education from classes VI to XII.
To further expand EMRS, it was decided that by 2022, an EMRS would be set up in every block where the Scheduled Tribe population exceeds 50% and comprises at least 20,000 tribal people. Eklavya schools share equal status with Navodaya Vidyalayas and offer special facilities to preserve local art and culture, alongside dedicated training in sports and skill development.
